The count was reassuring. If they came through the train in America these days, half the population would be chosen.

THE NIGHT before Madeleine and the baby were to come home from the hospital, I deposited another six hundred dollars in the manila envelope in the safe in the linen closet. I had already taken care of adding David’s name to the passport. The money had nothing to do with the fact that I had allowed them to circumcise my son. I put in more money every few months. We were five now. The cost of living was going up, though the longer I kept putting money in, the more certain I was I would never have to take it out.
